Financial Support for Palliative Care Patients

For people who are approaching the end of their life, preparing for it can be overwhelming. It's helpful to understand the type of care that is available.

People who are approaching end of their life, often consider their physical, psychosocial, spiritual and financial needs for both themselves and their family.

Palliative care can be accessed through referral from your General Practitioner, medical specialist or other health provider. To find a service in your local area go to the National Palliative Care Service Directory

How can we help with financial support?

AFRM Claims Advocacy (ACA) makes it easier for people approaching end of life to claim on their terminal illness insurance (and also release their superannuation).

Terminal illness insurance is automatic insurance cover which most superannuation funds offer their members.  Superannuation funds such as AustralianSuper, Cbus, Australian Retirement Fund, HESTA and most other superannuation funds provide automatic terminal illness cover.

The automatic terminal illness cover is available to those members who are aged under 65 and have an active superannuation fund.

Superannuation fund insurers define a terminal illness as a person who has been advised by two (2) medical specialists that they have limited life expectancy (less than 24 months).

If you are not sure if you are eligible, contact AFRM Claims Advocacy to discuss.

Finding out if you are eligible, is FREE to those patients who have engaged their Palliative Care Australia or their associated member organisations.

Did you know?

  • Terminal illness benefit payments are intended to support you if you are are approaching the end of their life (< 24 months life expectancy).

  • Before we commence a claim, ACA conducts a quick initial assessment to find out if you are eligible. It is a FREE assessment.

  • You’ve most likely been paying for your terminal illness cover via your superannuation. You need to have an active superannuation fund, ie. been contributing into your superannuation until recently.

  • A successful terminal illness claim payment, is in addition to receiving your superannuation funds.

  • Two (2) medical specialists need to confirm your condition and impact on life expectancy.

  • Even if your superannuation statement reads “nil cover” you may have had insurance cover at the time of diagnosis or when you stopped work – so it is worth checking.

  • A terminal illness payment can still be paid even if you already receive payments from injury compensation schemes or are a participant in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
