Information to help you claim your loved ones life insurance and superannuation

The Australasian Cemeteries and Crematoria Association (ACCA), has been working to improve death literacy across Australia.

A key part of this work is helping families understand their rights and entitlements, including access to life insurance and superannuation benefits that may be attached to a deceased person's superannuation account.

Through a new partnership, ACCA are supporting AFRM Claims Advocacy to raise awareness and assist families in navigating what can often be a complex and overwhelming claim process.

While financial assistance cannot remove the grief associated with losing a loved one, it may help ease some of the financial pressures that families face, particularly following the death of a person of working age (under the age of 65).

Most superannuation fund (AustralianSuper, Cbus, Hostplus, HESTA, QSuper, SunSuper etc) have automatic life insurance which may be available (to the family) upon the death of a loved one.

How do I know if my loved one had life insurance?

Most people who have superannuation have automatic life insurance through their superannuation fund (eg. AustralianSuper, Sunsuper, Hostplus).  It applies where your loved one has an active super fund and is aged under 65.

When they pass away, their life insurance (and / or superannuation death benefit) can be distributed to their beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries can include immediate family, a partner, financial dependants, and those nominated on the deceased’s policy.

As part of the ACCA partnership, this process starts with checking if your loved one had life insurance in their superannuation fund and  ACA provide this information to you for free.

Information for you to choose your level of help with the claim

For families in the care of an ACCA member cemetery can contact ACA for a confidential, no-obligation discussion to determine whether insurance or superannuation benefits may be available and whether they may be eligible to make a claim.

A family can then choose if they would like AFRM Claims Advocacy (ACA) expertise to help them with the claim.

As the only claim advocacy organisation that has been accepted by ACCA and the Funeral Associations in Australia (Funerals Australia and NFDA), ACA have helped hundreds of families with the superannuation and life insurance claim.

What does the superannuation and life insurance claim involve:

For families in the care of an ACCA member cemetery, ACA  help you access your loved one's life insurance claim (superannuation death benefit) and manage  the process each step of the way, until the insurance and super money is released to the family / beneficiary.  This includes chasing up the trustee and insurer on your behalf and helping to complete all the claim paperwork.

It all starts with ACA checking whether your loved one had life insurance in their superannuation fund - it is a free availability check

A life insurance claim with a valid nomination to a super dependant is separate to the “estate” and therefore does not need a solicitor to manage. Instead, using AFRM Claims Advocacy, can often make it quicker for the funds to be received and often more affordable than solicitor percentage fees or hourly rates.

Facts about life insurance & superannuation death benefits:

  • Your loved one was most likely paying premiums for life insurance via their superannuation fund.

  • You don't need the finalised death certificate for us to commence the claim process

  • Managing the life insurance is separate to managing  "the estate."

  • Using a claim advocate can be quicker and more affordable than using a solicitor (industry average time to have a life insurance claim paid is 2- 3months).

  • If you have a solicitor managing the estate / probate, we can work along side them to manage the life insurance claim. Given our expertise and flat fee for service  - it may be quicker and cheaper for you to do so.

  • Both the life insurance claim and the superannuation balance (super death benefit) may be available to claim.
